Xyz Summon

An Xyz Summon (pronounced ik-seez[i]) (エクシーズ ( しょう ) ( かん ) Ekushīzu Shōkan; normally abbreviated ( エクシーズ ) ( しょう ) ( かん ) since Duelist Alliance) is the human activity of Special Summoning an Xyz Monster from the Extra Deck by overlaying at least 2 monsters with the aforementioned Level.

How to Xyz Summon

During their Main Phase, the turn role player can Xyz Summon an Xyz Monster from their Actress Deck by vertically stacking two (or more, if required/possible) face-up monsters with the same Level as the Xyz Monster'southward Rank, that are listed on it as Xyz Materials. After that, the role player Summons the Xyz Monster from the Extra Deck in face-up Assault or Defence Position to an unoccupied Main Monster Zone or an Extra Monster Zone, placing it on top of the stacked Xyz Materials. The Materials used are fastened (stacking) nether the Xyz Monster, until later detached past Card Effects.

Monsters that do non accept Levels, such as Xyz Monsters and Link Monsters, cannot normally be used as Xyz Materials for an Xyz Summon, unless played otherwise.

Fifty-fifty if all advisable Monster Zones are occupied, an Xyz Monster can still be Xyz Summoned equally long equally at least one of the Xyz Materials used is in one of these Zones, and so that in that location is an available Zone when the Xyz Monster is Summoned.

Example

Avant-garde rulings

  • An Xyz Summon is a kind of built-in Special Summon, like Contact Fusion, Pendulum Summon, Synchro Summon or the Special Summon of a monster like "Blackness Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning", therefore it does not kickoff a Concatenation.
  • Xyz Monsters frequently accept effects that crave you lot to remove an Xyz Material(due south) from below it, known as detaching. When this happens, take the necessary Xyz Materials, and put them in the Graveyard.
  • Xyz Materials currently attached to an Xyz Monster are neither treated as monsters, nor treated as being on the field.
    • If "Dimensional Fissure" is active, all cards detached from Xyz Monsters will be placed in the Graveyard and non banished, even if that card is originally a Monster menu.
  • Trap Monsters and Pseudo-Trap Monsters can be used equally Xyz Materials.
  • Tokens cannot exist used as Xyz Materials, every bit Tokens cannot be in whatsoever country other than being on the field.
  • The battle positions of the monsters to be used as Xyz Material does not matter as long as they are in confront-up position. Withal, one time you have Xyz Summoned your Xyz Monster, ensure that the unabridged stack is neatly aligned in face-upwardly Attack Position, regardless of which Battle position the Xyz Monster is currently in.
  • An Xyz Monster Special Summoned via any means other than an Xyz Summon volition not accept any Xyz Materials (unless given to it past a card effect, such as "Xyz Reborn").
  • If an Xyz Monster leaves the field or otherwise ceases to exist a monster (such as being treated equally an Equip Carte past "Destiny HERO - Plasma", or being treated as an Xyz Material by the upshot of "Number 101: Silent Award ARK" or for the Xyz Summon of "Number F0: Utopic Future"), its Xyz Materials are sent to the Graveyard, unless the card effect says otherwise, such every bit those of the "Rank-Up-Magic" classic.
  • If an Xyz Monster is flipped face-downwardly, its Xyz Materials remain attached to it.
  • If a card effect banishes all cards that would be sent to the Graveyard (such equally "Macro Cosmos" or "Banisher of the Radiance"), and so when an Xyz Monster leaves the field, its Xyz Materials volition be banished. An Xyz Monster can notwithstanding detach its Materials while such an upshot is active; the Xyz Materials will be banished instead of being sent to the Graveyard.

Alternating methods

Autonomously from the basic method of performing an Xyz Summon outlined above, certain cards allow the controller to perform an Xyz Summon outside of its parameters. Usually through "Rank-Up-Magic" cards or "Xyz Development".

Anime

A normal Xyz Summon in ZEXAL.

In the anime, using monsters to perform an Xyz Summon is known equally overlaying them.

When an Xyz Summon is performed, the Xyz Materials then plow into forms of energy whose colors match their Attributes (Spell Cards being used every bit Xyz Material get green) before shooting into the air, sometimes spiraling effectually each other. A red-colored spiral portal known as an Overlay Network then appears, and the energy forms enter the portal. The newly Summoned Xyz Monster then emerges from the portal, its Xyz Materials, now colored in accordance with its Attribute, orbiting effectually it. The emergence from the portal differs betwixt Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL and Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-Five; in ZEXAL, the portal twists close and explodes with lite; in ARC-V a column of blue energy emerges from the portal (although the color of the free energy is dissimilar for some monsters, such equally "Odd-Optics Raging Dragon" for which ruddy energy emerged).

Certain monsters, especially "Number" monsters, may have unique or particularly designed Overlay Networks of a different color or shape. The thought of a spiral-shaped portal is derived from Konami's statement that Xyz Monsters entered our universe through a black pigsty. However, in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V, all Xyz Summons used the galaxy-style screw portal used largely by "Number" cards from Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL.

In the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V anime, an Xyz Summon performed using monsters that have been Pendulum Summoned is referred to equally a "Pendulum-Xyz Summon".

Shay Obsidian too refers to an Xyz Summon performed using an Xyz Monster and a non-Xyz Monster every bit materials as a "Cantankerous Xyz Summon".

In Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS when a Duelist declares an overlay during a Speed Duel, they will offset hold out both their arms (palms flat and facing downward) while declaring the Levels and names of the Xyz Materials, before placing their easily over i some other, seemingly to stand for stacking the cards on tiptop of one another, before the Overlay Network appears behind them rather than in front of them similar in previous spin-offs. The Xyz Materials go data and enter nodes on the Overlay Network (similar to the Arrowhead portal when performing a Link Summon). Once they are gear up, free energy flows in four beams past the Duelist creating a portal in forepart of them from which the newly formed Xyz Monster emerges. During a Chief Duel the Overlay Network appears underneath the selected materials and the portal from which the Xyz Monster emerges appears above the Duelist.

Theodore Hamilton introduces a new type of Xyz Summon called "Reincarnation Xyz Summon" which works similar to his "Reincarnation Link Summon" in that he can summon an Xyz Monster using a copy with the same proper noun.

Trivia

  • When Xyz Summons were revealed in the OCG, they were at commencement mistranslated every bit "Exceed Summons" by fans. This was likely considering "Xyz" is not an actual word and has no immediately obvious pronunciation. The discussion "Exceed" was probable the closest English equivalent to the Japanese エクシーズ Ekushīzu.
    • This term has fallen into official use in the Chinese OCG, where the term for "Xyz" is 超量 Chāoliàng or literally "Exceeding". This could besides be due in role to the Chinese language having no phonetic script for piece of cake transliteration, forcing developers to adopt an equivalent, translatable term.
